Strategically Selecting a Study Space October 22, 2008

I love studying in the library.  There is nothing more comforting than walking into the library on a chilly fall evening armed with your laptop, power cord (because you will actually be there forever,) every book for every class, notebooks, your planner, and of course, your caffeinated beverage of choice, i.e. two cans of Mountain Dew. Now I can’t vouch for everyone, but when I come to the library, I have plans.  And I mean big plans. Not only will I do the assignments at hand, but catch up on last weeks assignments, and while I’m at it, get a head start on next week. I’ve never actually followed through with this.

Now this may seem a bit ridiculous, but it is my actual thought process.  Before even entering the library I know exactly where I am going to study.  It’s been my study spot since freshman year.  I’ve tried out other places, but only because someone else thought my spot was a good one too.  And believe me it does not work.

I have to study on the second floor.  And it has to be in the west wing.  I don’t do tables and I fall asleep in chairs.  This is why I love the desks with the little walls on three sides.  It’s like my own miniature cubicle.  I will not sit there if there is somebody in front of or behind me – it’s too close! I can’t face towards the west, I must be facing east.  This way I can say hello if one of my friends walks by! The location of the cubicle is not the only deciding factor.  I always find the desk by a plug-in so that I don’t have to stretch my cord into a different study space.  Secondly, it is necessary to find a chair that does not have the arms.  This will allow you to sit cross-legged and work on your homework in a more comfortable fashion (sometimes I resort to swapping chairs when no body’s looking.)  After completing my routine I am ready to go – I can sit in the comfort of my study space and work on my homework perfectly content.

Now this may seem to be a bit extreme for choosing a study space, but think about your routine sometime – it may be just as crazy!  Before you know it you won’t even realize you’re doing it.. and you may make friends with those people who choose their space in the same way as you!
