Feeling nostalgic after your Thanksgiving dinner?  A little homesick after coming back to school?  Here’s a little piece of my (and possibly your) childhood, courtesy of Sesame Street:

Cookie Monster in the Library

While we don’t lend boxes of cookies here at Foley, you’re welcome to bring your own.  Here’s the library’s food policy:

No messy, smelly or hot food

In response to student needs, Foley Library allows beverages in covered containers and snack foods in the building. To protect our collections and building from harmful pests and damage, and to respect and honor others, we do ask that certain foods not be brought into the building. Food that is smelly, messy or hot is not acceptable for consumption in Foley. Feel free to bring in snacks or sandwiches, but items such as fast food, full meals or delivered items are not appropriate.

When eating or drinking in Foley, please respect the building and those who are responsible for cleaning it by disposing of garbage and recyclable materials in appropriate containers. Please report any spills to a library employee.

No food is allowed in the following areas of the library: Special Collections and the Library Instruction Classroom/Computer lab. All types of food are allowed in the 24 hour Study Lounge.

In light of the above, the library has applied the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics to its food and drink policy.

  • Plan ahead and prepare: When possible, plan to eat your meals before you come to the library. If you do carry in snacks and drinks, avoid messy, smelly or hot food that may damage library materials and facilities or annoy others. Be aware of the food and drink guidelines and exceptions.
  • Dispose of waste properly: Make sure to place recyclables in recycling bins and non-recyclable garbage in trash cans.
  • Leave what you find: Leave library resources, furnishings, and equipment as you found them — or in better condition that you found them.
  • Be considerate of other visitors: Respect the next library user and the next generation of library users.

Cookie Monster would be happy to know that, on at least one day of the year, we DO have cookies in the library.  Be sure to stop by on the evening of December 16th, for our annual Cookie Night!  The cookies (and I mean *lots* of cookies) generally make their debut by 8pm, and most are gone by midnight!

Should Cell Phones be Allowed in the Library? September 24, 2008

In the last library survey many students commented on the use of cell phones in the library. Because of this the library has implemented the following policy. What do you think of this issue?

In response to student concerns about noise in the library, we require all patrons to place their cell phones on silent or vibrate mode, and to conduct their conversations outside the library. Please take your belongings with you if you leave your study space. You may also leave belongings at a staffed service point while you are gone.
Cell phone use in Foley Center is limited to the Atrium outside the main doors of the library, the 24 Hour Study Lounge, and the Group Study Rooms (when no one in the group objects). Text messaging is acceptable in the library, as long as it does not cause a disturbance.
