Class Matters and Libraries

Click here for the full text article:

Summary: This article was a study of the extent to which immigrants have access to public libraries across the United States.

How it relates to Class Matters: Immigrants tend to live close to libraries and therefore take advantage of the services provided by the libraries. This highlights the immigrant’s equal opportunity to have access to the same resources as other residents, regardless of economic class. Libraries are created to be used by everyone, allowing everybody free access to sources and information.

Library Services!

As you enter the library, the reference desk is located directly across from the door and the circulation desk is located just to the left.

Reference Desk: Online Catalogue for Reserves:

On the Foley webpage, students may find a library catalogue where they can look up the reserves of any professor or class. Once on the Foley webpage, students can click on the catalogue search link and then choose the enclosed link for reserves. Then a page will show that has alphabetic links by Professor (last name), Course, and Department. Reserves can be found using any of these links provided. Once a link is chosen, all of the connected courses with reserves are listed as links posted by class.

Circulation Desk: Reservable Rooms, Media Rooms and Reserves:

The reservable rooms and media rooms are study rooms located on the second floor of the Foley Library. Check out a key for any of the rooms with the reference desk librarian. For the media room, you will check out a key and a remote for the TV. These rooms can be borrowed for two to three hours. There is a minimum of two to three people needed in order to check out a room. One to two people can check out headphones for a TV cubical, located behind the reference desk.  From the circulation desk dry erase markers, flip cameras, colored pencils, rulers, DVDs, and books can also be rented. Reserves may also be located at the circulation desk. Reserves are papers, books, DVDs and other resources assigned by professors for a particular class. These are organized in a file by professor’s last name and cannot be taken out of the library. Reserves can be held anywhere from one hour to three days.
