Vik’s Class Rocks “Class Matters”

The Neuse Regional Library in Kinston, North Carolina sponsors a program called Big Read that promotes literacy and love of literature in high school students.

By encouraging to students to read and appreciate literature at a young age, they are establishing a foundation of education for students to build upon in the future. Many students do not come from families that stress the importance of reading, the library serves as a gateway into the world of literature. The Big Read program not only promotes reading but the resources available through the program will allow children to overcome the social injustice done to them by the restrictions of their social standing.

This is how our library does COMPUTING!

Foley is configured into four main servers that students can access. The servers are set up so that error is minimized in the library. AKA back up plans. If you are working on a server and it crashes or is unable to compute or process your specific request, the other servers will more than likely be able to help you out. The servers are known to crash, but not usually at the same time which means that the library is able to be used for computer access. If you are using the wireless server and it crashes then you can plug into the Ethernet server and work on a different server completely, so one crashing does not impact the other. In the library the lower level lab is different than both the wireless and the Ethernet. The library is set up to accommodate students in many circumstance and it does a good job of making sure that there is little room for mistake. Apart from making sure that students will always have computer access, it makes sure that you always have computers. With only your ID card any student can check out a laptop computer to use for four hours in the library.

This is how our library does Inter Library Loan!

Now a library is not only used for computers, it is set up to supply you with literature as well. Foley is known for its extensive supply of resources, but like any library there will be sources it does not have. That’s not a problem in Foley because it will borrow and trade sources form other libraries all around the world to accommodate your needs. Using the ILLiad system Foley will provide you with just about any book from just about anywhere, you just have to make sure you give them enough time to get it to you. Most sources are provided free of charge but if it’s something special you might have to pitch in a little. In short, if you ask Foley for something, the librarians will be more likely be able to help you.
