Librarians Involved in Social Justice

The San Diego public library launched a bookmobile on September 21, 1948 that brought educational tools (aka books) to much needed areas of the Greater San Diego area.

This article relates to more than one theme in Class Matters.  Education, general knowledge and social capital all contribute to this “billboard on wheels.”  The bookmobile helps to support, transform and empower children and adults of all different ethnic and social backgrounds.  By appearing in such places as social service agencies, elementary schools and retirement communities, this project launched by the San Diego public library brings knowledge and joy into a society divided by social and cultural differences.
