Should Cell Phones be Allowed in the Library? September 24, 2008

In the last library survey many students commented on the use of cell phones in the library. Because of this the library has implemented the following policy. What do you think of this issue?

In response to student concerns about noise in the library, we require all patrons to place their cell phones on silent or vibrate mode, and to conduct their conversations outside the library. Please take your belongings with you if you leave your study space. You may also leave belongings at a staffed service point while you are gone.
Cell phone use in Foley Center is limited to the Atrium outside the main doors of the library, the 24 Hour Study Lounge, and the Group Study Rooms (when no one in the group objects). Text messaging is acceptable in the library, as long as it does not cause a disturbance.

I think this is a great policy! The voices really carry up the stair well.

Yup! I’ve overheard way too many “private” conversations in the library!

I believe that some can quietly monitor their voices while carrying on a phone conversation, but there are an obscene number of people who project their voices like a megaphone when on their cellular phones, so I think the policy is a good choice.

this is a regressive policy. cell phones are just tools of communication. if someone talks too loud, deal with them individually. some people talk too loud face-to-face. to paraphrase the anti-gun-control slogan: cell phones aren’t the problem, people are. deal with them.
